'Classic' Amiga models

The following is a list of the major 'Classic' Amiga models, in the order in which they were first released. These are the models launched by Commodore between 1985 and 1994 (when Commodore went bankrupt). They all use CPUs in Motorola's 680x0 family (although PowerPC accelerator cards were released for some models), and the final version of AmigaOS and Kickstart they shipped with was 3.1 (later, AmigaOS 3.5 and 3.9 were released as upgrades, but no new Kickstarts).

All were originally designed and manufactured by Commodore, although the A1200 and A4000T were also manufactured by Escom's 'Amiga Technologies' subsidiary in 1995-96. Even in early 2010 it is still possible to buy 'new old stock' of certain models, particularly A1200s and (NTSC) CD32s.

  • A1000 (1985, 68000 CPU @ 7 MHz, OCS chipset, AmigaOS / Kickstart 1.0 or 1.1)
  • A500 (1987, 68000 CPU @ 7 MHz, OCS chipset, AmigaOS / Kickstart 1.2 or 1.3)
  • A2000 (1987, 68000 CPU @ 7 MHz, OCS chipset, AmigaOS / Kickstart 1.3)
  • CDTV (1990, 68000 CPU @ 7 MHz, OCS chipset, Kickstart 1.3)
  • A3000 (1990, 68030 CPU @ 16 or 25 MHz, ECS chipset, AmigaOS / Kickstart 2.0)
  • A500+ (1991, 68000 CPU @ 7 MHz, ECS chipset, AmigaOS / Kickstart 2.04)
  • A600 (1992, 68000 CPU @ 7 MHz, ECS chipset, AmigaOS / Kickstart 2.05)
  • A1200 (1992, 68020 CPU @ 14 MHz, AGA chipset, AmigaOS / Kickstart 3.0 or 3.1)
  • A4000 (1992, 68030 or 68040 CPU @ 25 MHz, AGA chipset, AmigaOS / Kickstart 3.0 or 3.1)
  • CD32 (1993, 68020 CPU @ 14 MHz, AGA chipset, Kickstart 3.0)
  • A4000T (1994, 68040 CPU @ 25 MHz or 68060 CPU @ 50 MHz, AGA chipset, AmigaOS / Kickstart 3.1)

Re-Implementations of the Amiga

There are ongoing efforts to rebuild the Amiga. The Minimig project uses a Xilinx Spartan3 FPGA to recreate the custom chipset. A C-One can run Minimig's core. Natami aims to create a motherboard that remains compatible and shares design principles with the original Amiga while introducing some advanced features.

  • Minimig (2008, MC68000 CPU @ 7 MHz, open source OCS compatible chipset, Kickstart 1.3 image needed)
  • Natami (prototype only, 68060 CPU, closed source SuperAGA chipset, Kickstart 3.1 image needed)

'New' Amiga models

The following lists the machines which can run the 'next generation' Amiga-like operating systems (AmigaOS 4, MorphOS or AROS). Unless otherwise stated, all use PowerPC-based CPUs (unlike the 'Classic' Amigas which all used '68k' CPUs).

Discontinued models

  • AmigaOne SE (2002 by Eyetech, runs AmigaOS 4)
  • Pegasos I (Feb 2003 by Genesi / bPlan, runs AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS)
  • AmigaOne XE (2003 by Eyetech, runs AmigaOS 4)
  • Pegasos II (Sep 2003 by Genesi / bPlan, runs AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS)
  • AmigaOne Micro-A1 (2004 by Eyetech, runs AmigaOS 4)
  • Mac Mini G4 (Jan 2005, by Apple, runs MorphOS 2.4+)
  • EFIKA 5200 (Nov 2006, by Genesi / bPlan, runs MorphOS [with AROS port underway])

In production

  • SAM 440ep (Oct 2007, by ACube Systems, runs AmigaOS 4 and AROS)
  • SAM 440ep-flex (Apr 2009, by ACube Systems, runs AmigaOS 4 and AROS)
  • standard x86 PCs (certain configurations run AROS)
